Dongguan City's rapidly developing economy is matched by the development of its transportation infrastructure, a result of careful planning. Dongguan now plays a vital role in the communication line between Guangzhou and Hong Kong as well as with the cities lying along the Pearl River.
At present Dongguan does not have its own airport, but visitors can use the airports in Guangzhou, Zhuhai and Shenzhen. Trains and buses run frequently between them and Dongguan, providing a convenient means of transport. Alternatively, for those visitors traveling from the bigger cities in China, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and Hong Kong, train travel may be the preferred option. Dongguan lies at the hub of four main railway lines, and with four railway stations it offers a comprehensive train service in all directions.
In addition the road network provides a highly convenient and modern transportation system throughout Dongguan. Consisting of about 2,640 kilometers (about 1640 miles) of highway, the road density in Dongguan is the heaviest in China, strengthening the vital role the city plays in the mid-southern region of Guangdong Province. Furthermore, some 13 towns and districts of Dongguan City have been linked together, so it is possible for visitors to reach any destination by taking one of the city buses which link the urban area with the suburbs.
Bordering on the Pearl River, it is not surprising that the Humen Port of Dongguan is one of the most important ports in southern China. Not only is it important for trade but it also allows water access for passengers from Hong Kong to Dongguan. To sum up, as one of the most prosperous cities in southern China, Dongguan is easily accessible by air, train, bus or ferry for both international and domestic visitors.
