Shanghai, situated on the estuary of Yangtze River, is the busiest transport hub in eastern China. As an important financial and business center of China and of the world, Shanghai has highly developed infrastructure, including a convenient public transportation network.
The city has various links to the outside. Today you can easily travel to Shanghai from not only the adjacent cities of Suzhou, Nanjing and Hangzhou, but also the distant cities such as Beijing, Xian, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong. Many cities in other countries also enjoy convenient transportation links with Shanghai. You can travel there by air, train, long-distance bus, or ship.
Shanghai is the only Chinese city that has two international airports - Pudong International Airport and Hongqiao International Airport. The two modern airports are equipped with very advanced facilities. Everyday, about 1,000 flights travel through the two airports, linking Shanghai with many domestic and international cities such as Beijing, Hong Kong, New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris, Tokyo and Singapore.
The railway network of Shanghai provides you with an inexpensive and comfortable way to get to the city. Huning (Shanghai - Nanjing) Railway and Huhang (Shanghai - Hangzhou) Railway pass through Shanghai and connect its three main railway stations with cities all over the country. Here you can also take advantage of tourist trains and special 'Holiday Trains' from Shanghai to scenic areas in other provinces such as Mt. Huangshan in Anhui and Mt. Wuyishan in Fujian.
Long-distance buses are also convenient when traveling to Shanghai. Four national highways and four expressways pass through Shanghai, composing the city's efficient long-distance bus transport system. Now over 1,000 routes are served by 40 long-distance bus stations in Shanghai.
Due to its strategic location, transportation via waterways is also highly accessible in Shanghai. The city is located on the estuary of Yangtze River and midpoint of China's north-south coastline, and currently stands as China's largest port. The increasing quantity of goods and passengers moved in and out has promoted the development of economy and tourism of Shanghai and its adjacent cities. The great number of domestic and international passenger liners will easily accommodate your travel needs as you journey to Shanghai.
By Air
Shanghai has two international airports something no other city in China can boast. The Pudong International Airport handles 60% of flights including most flights from all over the world, while the remaining 40% use Hongqiao International Airport. As one of the main Chinese airline hubs, Shanghai has opened connections with nearly two hundred cities, half domestic ones and half international and regional ones. Direct flights provide Shanghai with connections to dozens of international air terminals such as Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Fukuoka, Osaka, Tokyo, Bangkok, Brussels, Madrid, Paris, Singapore, London, Moscow, Rome as well as regional links with Hong Kong and Macau. Domestic flights link Shanghai with Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xian, Xiamen, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Shenyang and others.

Shanghai has introduced tourist shopping buses bound for Yiwu (a famous wholesale market of small articles in China) of Zhejiang Province. Every morning at 7:00 a bus starts from People's Square of Shanghai and Yiwu respectively. It reaches the destination within three hours and returns at 17:00.
Tourist shopping buses operating between Shanghai and Zhangjiagang of Jiangsu Province are also available. The bus starts from Jinhaihua Restaurant in Zhangjiagang at 8:30 every Saturday. It stops at Qipu Road and Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street of Shanghai. After staying in the city for almost ten hours, the bus makes its return at 20:00. A round trip costs CNY 80 per person.
By Ship
Shanghai, situated at the estuary of Yangtze River and midpoint of China's north-south coastline, is the world's third largest port and China's largest seaport. It is the only port in China connecting the country's shipping system of sea, river, and freshwater.
Ships sailing from Shanghai Port voyage to some 500 ports in over 160 countries and regions all over the world. Due to the slow speed, some long-distance sea routes have been closed. However, the quantity of the goods moved in and out of Shanghai port ranks highly among the world's major ports. Passenger transportation through Shanghai port is also busy. The following is detailed introduction to the main passenger ports in Shanghai.
International Cruise
Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal
Located at the North Bund Area in Hongkou District near downtown, Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal has been under construction since 2004, and the whole project including the passenger port, Shanghai International Port Group Building, and some corresponding business establishments, will be completed by the beginning of 2008. With the passenger port being in operation, Gaoyang International Passenger Transport Center, the future parking of Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal, is now serving as a temporary establishment to handle the business of international cruises. The port in use now has berths which can accommodate large passenger liners. Sailing from Shanghai, international cruises can reach Japan and South Korea.
'Costa Allegra', the first cruise ship berthing in this port, operates a regular 6-day tourist cruise routed: Shanghai (China) <---> Nagasaki (Japan) <---> Cheju (South Korea).
'Korea-China Bridge' ship operates regularly between China's Shanghai and Mokpo Port in South Korea. A single journey takes only 12 hours.
'New Jianzhen' is a passenger and cargo ship sailing regularly between Shanghai and Japan. It starts from Shanghai at 13:00 every Saturday, and arrives at Kobe or Osaka Ports of Japan on Monday morning the next week. The ship makes its return voyage from Kobe or Osaka at 12:00 every Tuesday, and it reaches Shanghai on Thursday. The speed of the ship is low, and a round trip usually takes over 80 hours. However there are still many people who choose this liner because of the good environment, excellent service, and low price. A single journey ship passage costs CNY 1,300 to CNY 2,600 (JPY 20,000 to JPY 40,000) per person according to the standard of cabin chosen. Alternatively you can pay CNY 6,500 (JPY 100,000) for a VIP room, which can accommodate two persons. For more information of this liner, you can phone 021-63257642.
'Suzhou' ship also voyages between Shanghai and Osaka in Japan. Starting from Shanghai at 11:00 every Tuesday, it reaches Osaka at 9:00 on Thursday. Every Friday, the ship makes its return at 12:00, and gets to Shanghai on Sunday. The ship passage is almost the same as that of 'New Jianzhen' ship.
When you take an international cruise, you'd better go to the port two hours before departure to conduct the boarding procedures. Ship tickets can be bought or booked at Shanghai International Ferry Co., Ltd. with your passport or other valid identification.
Ticket Office Address: D-G, 15 F, Jin'an Mansion, No.908, East Daming Road, Hongqiao District

After completion of the whole project, Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal will have more international passenger liners to facilitate the needs of modern tourism.

Generally, transportation inside Shanghai city is considered both convenient and satisfactory. As an international metropolis with the largest population in China, Shanghai will inevitably face the problem of overpopulation and traffic congestion. However the situation is currently somewhat better than in Beijing. To relieve the transportation pressure, the government has done a lot of work including constructing a large number of roads, subways, and opening more new bus routes. Now, the city has the world's largest public transportation system handling the largest daily volume of passengers.
A high-density road network makes overland transportation easy. Taxis, city buses, and sightseeing buses are ready to bring you to everywhere in Shanghai. If you prefer driving yourself, rental cars are available - a word of caution though - if possible, avoid the congested overhead roads in the urban area inside the Inner Ring Road during rush hour.
Shanghai's five subway lines have connections all over the city, with stops at or nearby the main attractions and commercial areas. If you are just sightseeing and in no hurry, the subway will provide you with fast and comfortable service (though you may want to avoid rush hour of 7:00 to 9:30 and 16:30 to 19:30). Additionally, you may want to check out the speedy maglev train which runs between Longyang Road and Pudong Airport.
Nanpu Bridge, Yangpu Bridge, Xupu Bridge, Lupu Bridge and various tunnels across the Huangpu River provide direct links between Pudong New District and Puxi Area. Ferries offer convenient shuttle service across the Huangpu River, allowing you to avoid the crowded bridges and tunnels while appreciating the river scenery. Additionally ferryboats are available between the mainland of Shanghai and its three islands of Chongming, Changqing and Hengsha.
By Bus
Public buses in Shanghai are a particularly convenient means of transport, with some 1,100 bus lines covering the length and breadth of the city. Shanghai Railway Station, People's Square, Xujiahui, Zhongshan Park Wujiaochang, Shanghai Indoor Stadium and Dongchang Road serve as the main bus transfer stations in downtown Shanghai. Shenzhuang, Longyang Road and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park stations provide many routes to Shanghai's suburbs.
Shanghai public buses are identified either by numbers or Chinese characters. Buses can generally be classified into the following nine categories:
1. Downtown Regular Lines: 1 (01) - 200
2. Rush Hour Lines: 201 - 299 (although some include regular lines)
3. Night Lines: 301 - 399
4. Cross-River Lines (the new cross-river lines): 401 - 499
5. Bridge Line X, Tunnel Line X (the old cross-river lines): X = specific route number
6. Special Lines: 504 - 599, 801 - 899, 901 - 999
7. Pudong New District Special Lines: 601 - 699
8. Outskirts Regular Lines: 701 - 799
9. Suburban Lines: usually identified by Chinese characters representing an abbreviated form of the first and terminal stations' names.
Ticket prices vary depending on the category of the bus line:
• Categories 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8 charge CNY 1 per person for journeys within 13 kilometers (approx. 8 miles), and CNY 1.5 thereafter. Air-conditioned buses charge CNY 2 per person.
• Categories 4 and 6 charge according to the distance with a minimum of CNY 1. Air-conditioned buses charge a minimum of CNY 2.
• Category 9 buses charge according to the distance traveled with a minimum charge of CNY 1 for both normal and air-conditioned buses.
It is recommended that you keep some loose change with you for bus journeys as some routes do not have a conductor. Coins need to be placed in the slot at the entrance to the bus. A Shanghai Public Transportation Card can also be purchased and used on most routes except some of the Special and Suburban Lines. More information can be obtained by calling 021-16088160.
Shanghai also has several Airport Lines which are discussed further in the Airport Transportation section. There are also ten designated Tourist Lines to help provide easy access around the city.

By Subway
The subway is a speedy, safe, comfortable and convenient means of transportation for traveling around Shanghai. The main attractions and bustling commercial areas such as the Bund, Longhua Temple, Nanjing Road, Huaihai Road and Xujiahui can be reached by several subway lines.
At present, Shanghai has five subway lines in operation, totaling approximately 145 kilometers (about 90 miles). Subway Lines 1 to 5 currently make up about 13% of the city's mass transit system and greatly improve traffic around the city.
The subway system has introduced electronic ticketing so you should carry some change. A single journey ticket, valid for two hours, can be bought at a ticket dispenser or from a ticket booth. The charge is proportional to mileage with a ceiling price of CNY 9. The ticket price of Subway Line 5 is CNY 2 - 3 while the charge of the other four lines is CNY 3 for the first six kilometers (about 3.7 miles), and CNY 1 for each extra ten kilometers (6.2 miles).
A Shanghai Public Transportation Card is also available and convenient. The card can be used not only on the subway, but also on some public buses, ferries, and even taxies. It costs CNY 100, including a CNY 30 deposit and CNY 70 for use. The card can be used repeatedly and you can deposit more money in it at designated subway stations, bus stations, banks, or stores.
For tourists, a souvenir ticket is a good choice. The ticket is valid for one year and can be bought at several designated subway stations. You can only take the train once on certain lines. When getting out of the station, the ticket will be returned to you as a souvenir.
Here is a map of Shanghai Subway for your reference, including the present five lines, several lines under construction, and lines still being programmed. The names of the stations which are under construction or proposed are temporary names.
Subway Line 1, the first subway in Shanghai, is the north-south trunk line in the city's transportation network. Starting from Gongfu Xincun Subway Station (6:00 - 22:30) in the northern Baoshan District, the line runs southwards, passing Shanghai Railway Station, People's Square, Hengshan Road, Huaihai Road, and Xujiahui, and finally getting to Shenzhuang Station (5:30 - 22:20) in the southern Minhang District. The present line with a length of 33 kilometers (about 20.5 miles) will be extended north to Chongming in the future. People's Square Station and Shenzhuang Station are the main transfer stations.
Subway Line 2 is a west-east line linking the west Changning District and the east Pudong New District. Line 2 runs between the west Songhong Rd. Station (5:42 - 22:53) and the east Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park Station (6:28 - 22:30), passing the People's Square in the city center, the bustling East Nanjing Road, the Bund, Huangpu River, and Lujiazui Financial and Trade Zone. This line will soon be extended west to Hongqiao International Airport.
At Longyang Rd. Station near the east end of Subway Line 2, the fast Shanghai Maglev Train (SMT) can take you to Pudong International Airport within eight minutes. The train operates every day from 7:00 to 21:00 at an interval of 15 minutes. It costs CNY 50 one-way (economic) and CNY 100 for VIP, CNY 80 round-trip (economic) and CNY 160 for VIP.
Subway Line 3 was formerly known as the Pearl Line (Mingzhu Line). Now it is a north-south line from North Jiangyang Rd. Station (5:30 - 21:40) in the northern Baoshan District to Shanghai South Railway Station (5:55 - 21:24) in Xuhui District, passing Jiangwan Town, Hongkou Football Stadium, and Shanghai Railway Station. Line 3 will be extended to Baosteel Group in the near future.
Subway Line 4 is designed as a ring line in the city's subway network. At present, it is a C-shaped line from Damuqiao Rd. Station (5:33 - 21:03) in Puxi Area to Lancun Rd. Station (5:55 - 21:40) in Pudong New District, including a section of line sharing with Subway Line 3. The remaining part of the ring is under construction and will be completed in 2007.
Subway Line 5, the first light rail line in China, has been in operation since 2003. It begains from Shenzhuang Station (6:00 - 22:20), the end point of Subway Line 1, and runs southwards to Tianxing Rd. Station in Minhang Development Zone (6:00 - 22:00).
From Monday to Friday, the intervals between subway trains usually are 3 - 5 minutes in the morning rush hour between 7:00 and 9:30, and 4 - 6 minutes in the evening rush hour between 16:30 and 19:30. During other periods of time or on weekends, the intervals will be slightly longer.
Future Shanghai Subway
By the end of the year 2007, Shanghai will have eight subway lines, totaling over 230 kilometers (about 143 miles). The ring line, Subway Line 4, and Line 6, Line 8 (Part 1), and Line 9 (Part 1) will be completed. Subway Line 6 in Pudong New District will operate between the north Gangcheng Rd. Station and the south Jiyang Rd. Station. It will be a great benefit to the residents in Pudong. Subway Line 8 (Part 1) will be an important north-south line from Shiguang Rd. Station in northern Yangpu District to Yaohua Rd. Station in Pudong New District, passing seven districts of Shanghai. Additionally Line 8 will be extended south to Pujiang Town in the future. Subway Line 9 (Part 1) will run from Songjiang Xincheng Station in the southwest Songjiang District to Guilin Rd. Station in Xuhui District near the city center.
In 2009, Subway Line 7, running between Jinqiu Rd. Station in the northwest Baoshan District and Fangdian Rd. Station in the southeast Pudong New District, will be in operation. At that time, the line will be very helpful for passengers traveling to the venue of the 2010 World Expo, which is near the Fadian Rd. Station in Pudong.
In 2010, Line 9 will be extended northeast to Middle Yanggao Rd. Station in Pudong. Subway Line 10 will be in operation. It will run from New Jiangwan City Station in the northeast Yangpu District to Hongqiao Airport in the west of Shanghai, passing Huaihai Road, Nanjing Road, Sichuan Road, Laoximen Area, and Yuyuan Garden in the city center, so it will be easy for passengers to make transfers to other subway trains or buses. Subway Line 11 (Part 1), the north part of the whole line, will be completed before the World Expo. It will run between Jiading North Station in the northwest Jiading District and Jiangsu Rd. Station in Changning District. Later on, it will be extended southeast to Sanlin in Pudong.
In that way, Shanghai will have 11 subway lines in 2010, totaling about 400 kilometers (about 250 miles) and making up over 35% of the city's mass transit. The subway transportation network, especially Line 7 and Line 8, will facilitate the World Expo.
By Ferry
The Huangpu River running through Shanghai, divides the city into two parts - Pudong New District (east of the river) and Puxi Area (west of the river). The three islands of Chongming, Changxing, and Hengsha under the jurisdiction of Shanghai are separated from the main by the Yangtze River. As a result, ferries play a very important role in the city's transportation.

As many bridges, tunnels, and subways are built, people have much more choices when traveling across the Huangpu River. However, ferryboats with 100-year's history in Shanghai are still popular choices for pedestrians and cyclists because of their convenience and low price.
At present, there are in total 19 ferry lines serving nearly 40 ferry stations along both sides of the Huangpu River, providing links between Pudong and Puxi. A pedestrian pays CNY 0.5 on common ferryboats and CNY 2 on air-conditioned ones like ferryboats on Dongjin Line. The fare for a cyclist is CNY 1.3 on common ferryboats and CNY 2.8 on air-conditioned ones. The price for a motor cyclist is CNY 1.5 on common ferryboats and CNY 3 on air-conditioned ones. Motor vehicles cost more, usually CNY 10 - 20. Shanghai Public Transportation Card can be used on Huangpu River Ferryboats.
