On October 11, 2001, the World Memorial Fund for Architecture (WMF), an international fund for the protection of world heritage sites announced in New York that the relic of an ancient bazaar-Sideng Street in Shaxi Town of Yunnan, China, has been added to the 2002 list of internationally significant sites, together with the Great Wall, the Ohel Rachel Synagogue of Shanghai and the Christian Pagoda and Monastery of Shannxi Province. Shaxi is a historical old town. There we could find well-preserved drama platform, horse-caravan-inn, temple, city gate, old square road. We are proud that our people have done well to preserve the ancient market in excellent condition. Lijiang is a beautiful shining 'jewel' on the Northwest Yunnan Plateau, neighboring the southeast side of the Tibetan Plateau, which is called the 'Roof of the World'. We will first head to the scenic Black Dragon Pool to explore the rich Naxi minority culture. Lijiang is the home to Naxi, a minority with matrilineal culture. Naxi is featured by the Dongba Language (Dongba means 'shamans')--a local language with writing system consisting of more than 1300 pictographs. The Dongba Language, which was created more than a thousand years ago, is currently the only existing hieroglyphic language. After then, we'll enjoy our free time in the Old Town of Lijiang. Once passing the Waterwheel at the entrance of the Old Lijiang Town, we will find ourselves transported into a world of narrow cobblestone streets bordering canals of crystal clear freshly melted snow. It has kept unchanged since the Ming Dynasty (A.D.1368-1644) when the town was founded. Lijiang, possibly the best-preserved old town in China, is one of the last places in this country where we can witness and experience a historical, traditional, ancient urban culture. Remarkably, the old houses with stone foundations, plastered whitewashed brick walls, red wooden doors, shutters and balconies, and sloping tiled roofs, survived a recent earthquake without much damage, while the new concrete buildings were flattened. The canals are lined with weeping willows and decorative arched bridges linking one alley to the next. After dinner, we will attend the concert of the ancient Naxi music in the evening.
