10-Day Yunnan Alpine Botany Safari

Day 1   Arrive Lijing via Kunming
We take the morning flight to Kunming and a connecting flight to Lijiang. Upon arriving at Lijiang airport, meet the local guide and transfer to your hotel. We enjoy our free time having a rest after the long flight.

Day 2   Lijiang-Ganheba
Today, we drive for about 30 kms out of Lijiang old town to Ganheba. It takes us between one and two hours to hike to the a grove of alpine flowers including Azaleas (rhododendron), Gentianaceae, Primulaceaes, Camellias, Liliaceaes, Orichidaceaes and Meconopsis.
Today, we take a boxed lunch with us and in the afternoon, drive back to Lijiang. If time permits, we explore the old town of Lijiang and the Black Dragon Pond from where we can view the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Day 3   Lijiang-Mahuanggu
We continue to explore the alpine flowers in Mahuanggu, the types of flowers are different from those in Ganheba. In the afternoon, we drive to Lake Lashi. Lake Lashi provides a habitat for the endangered black-necked crane and about 71 species of migratory birds representing 43% of Yunnan's and 21% of China's total bird species.

Day 4  Lijiang-Xinzhu Botany Garden

The Xinzhu Natural Botanic Garden is located between an altitude of 2,350m and 3,850m in Xinzhu, which is about 165 km (5 hrs driving) away from Lijiang. The diverse terrain, rich precipitation and plenitudinous sunlight form an unbeatable environment for plants to grow. The area covers less than 10 square kilometers but houses almost all the species of plant found in the Parallel Mountains. The main plants there are Ranunculus, Rosaceae, Liliaceae, Trilliaceae, Magnoliaceae, and over 50 Azaleas
We will stay in Xinzhu for one night and drive back to Lijiang on day 5.

Day 5   Lijiang to Gyalthang
This morning, we drive out of Lijiang via Tiger Leaping Gorge, one of the most strenuous gorges on this planet and Baishuitai, where the limestone water forms terraced water pools. Later in the afternoon, we get to Gyalthang and check into our hotel. Gyalthang is an ancient town in Kham Tibet, rich in culture and history.

Day 6  Gyalthang
This morning, we visit the Songtsam Monastery, which is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. After that, we drive to Lake Bita, an ancient high attitude lake (over 3,000metres ASL) surrounded by alpine meadows and wild flowers on one side and a temperate rainforest on the other. We enjoy our afternoon around Lake Bita.

Day 7  Gyalthang to Feilaisi
Dechen is our destination today. We will conquer the snowy mountain of Baima by vehicle, it's a great place for us to see alpine flowers like azaleas. Many different types of azaleas will make the mountain colorful and beautiful, particularly in May, June, September and October. We arrive at Feilaisi later this afternoon and if weather permits, we could drive to Feilaisi to admire Tibet's greatest sacred mountain -Kawa Karpo, the peak of which is 6,740m/22,107ft ASL. The driving today will take five hours but it really is worth it.

Day 8  Feilaisi to Gyalthang
After admiring Kawa Karpo, we drive back to Gyalthang along the same route.
When we get to Gyalthang, we enjoy our free time by exploring around before our farewell dinner.

Day 9  Gyalthang to Kunming and back
We take the morning flight to Kunming, then a connecting flight to your next destination
