The Administrative Office of Yuanmingyuan (the Old Summer Palace) announced Tuesday that it has bought 20 electric-powered yachts and 22 electric-powered wagons to help visitors to explore the hinterland of the park. Some boats have launched in the park this month before the lake begins to freeze.
Covering a large area of about 346 hectares (856 acres), the park has numerous scenic spots. At present, most visitors concentrate only on the spots in the eastern and northern parts of the park; whereas there are few people paid visits to the scenic spots in the remote western part of the park where grows desolate primitive plants and extends sinuous hills.
To help visitors explore the western part of the park, the park has increased the number of electric-powered wagons from 4 to 22 and each of which can hold over 10 people. Now, all the 22 wagons are fully in service and they can transport 3,000 visitors everyday. Visitors can take the electric-powered wagons to the scenic spots in the western part of the park. The electric-powered wagon fee is priced at CNY 5 per person.
Meanwhile, four electric-powered yachts with seating capacity of over 10 passengers on each yacht have been in operation. Visitors can reach Fuhai (Sea of Fortune) in the west of Yuanmingyuan by yacht. The yacht fee is CNY 10 per person. In 2009, all the 20 yachts will be in service so that visitors can reach the scenic spots such as Jiuzhouqingyan in the west of the park.
Additionally, Yuanmingyuan will take more measures to improve the water environment and raise water level in the park so that some watercourses with low water level will be navigable. Visitors will have a chance to view the charming hills and water clearly on the electric-powered yacht.
